Real bronze vs not so real bronze. How to tell the difference
September 22, 2018|bronze, bronze horse sculptures, bronze horse statue
What's the difference between a real lost wax cast bronze statue made from high quality bronze metal, and some of the cheap statues that are being sold as "cold cast bronze" or "bronze look"?
I've been approached by numerous collectors who purchased a bronze horse statue elsewhere, and then wanted to have them repaired or just evaluated and they were disappointed to learn that what they had was not really a bronze horse.
The difference can be seen in the value of the bronze statue at purchase, but also in the quality of the bronze casting. A museum quality bronze casting is created from Fine Art casting quality bronze ingots which are composed of a minimum of 95% Copper, combined with Silicon and Manganese to form the alloy which is Bronze.
The best quality lost wax Bronze castings are hollow and have walls which are 1/4 inch thick. This is because at that optimum thickness, the bronze castings can be poured with the minimum amount of distortions and flaws. So, a simple test to give a good guess as to whether or not it is bronze is simply to tap on the statue and see if it rings like a metal bell.
Bronze has a heavy relative gravity. So when you pick up a real bronze statue they are generally heavier than people expect them to be. (Be careful not to hurt yourself lifting!)
Advantages of real lost wax bronze metal statues are:
Durability - real bronze lasts through the ages.
Repair ability - if a real bronze is damaged, it can be welded using bronze welding rod and then refinished with patina.
Value - real bronze holds value in artwork, while less lasting materials do not.
Generally, artists whose work is of higher quality tend to cast their work in bronze, while lower quality artwork is usually cast in resin (cold cast bronze)
I've had a number of people contact me about repairs to a statue they purchased elsewhere which had then been broken. Unfortunately, I don't have any expertise in fixing such statues, since they are not created from real bronze. Most so called bronze statues which have been imported are extremely difficult to repair either due to the poor quality of the metal which is not really bronze (some will even rust in the elements) or due to the fact that the statue is not metal at all, but is really fiberglass resin with bronze dust embedded or some other material such as cement or even body putty.
I suggest making sure of the quality of the bronze statue as well as learning a bit about the artist prior to making an investment in your art collection, so that you can be sure to have bronze horse sculptures which will last and increase in value as they brings you joy!
